The Insurance Consumers’ Association of Nigeria (INSCAN) is an organization with the primary goal of protecting the rights of her members – the Insurance Consumers in Nigeria. The Insurance Operators and the Regulators exist because of the Insurance Consumer but we the Consumers have been patient on-lookers on matters of great importance to our lives, our assets and our future for so many years in Nigeria.

The coming to life of INSCAN is to make the Insurance industry appreciate the paramountcy of the policyholders’ interest and thereby earn the trust and confidence of the public in the Insurance Mechanism in Nigeria. By this, there will be a stop to the disgraceful act of people exchanging blows or causing traffic jams on the streets in events of motor accidents when mere exchange of Insurance documents could resolve such issues.

To be the leading advocate of responsible Insurance delivery in Nigeria and remove the apathy and mystery surrounding Insurance contracts.


The Background
By August 2008, the National Insurance Commission announced its determination to enforce compliance with all the Compulsory Insurance Products in Nigeria and in August 2010 moved to prosecute the owner/contractors of the collapsed building at Gambiya Street in Abuja where 19 people died on the 11th of August 2010. The Lagos State Government in July 2010 promulgated the law on Building Control which stipulates Compulsory Insurance provision on all buildings that are occupied or under construction. Other states of the Federation will definitely follow these positive steps. Consequent upon these developments, the need to put in place a trusted, accessible and affordable consumer-led structure to ensure that:

- All legitimate claims of the consumers are paid by the Insurers.

- Any Nigerian who is a victim of factory accident, road accident, collapsed building (either completed or under construction) must get compensation, if need be, through the cheapest intervention – INSCAN.

- Where a factory, vehicle or property owner did not take the appropriate Insurance cover, INSCAN will stand for the injured victims before the liable party within the provisions of the laws.

- Where the property owner took the appropriate Insurance cover and the Insurance Company denied the victim or the insured, the appropriate compensation, then INSCAN will fight for them.

- All Nigerians embrace the Insurance mechanism as the only and cheapest way to mitigate the financial burden of the vicissitudes of life.
